Maya Annik Bedward
Maya Annik Bedward is a Jamaican-French Canadian filmmaker. She holds an MA in Communications and a BA in Political Science and Cinema Studies. After living in Brazil and the UK, she returned to Toronto and launched Third Culture Media with support from the Michaëlle Jean Foundation. Her films have screened at festivals across North America and Europe and sold to Air Canada and the CBC. Maya is a recipient of the CBC Business of Broadcasting Mentorship and a fellow of the RIDM Talent Lab. Her most recent short THE HAIRCUT premiered at Hot Docs this year.
Black Zombie is a feature doc about the most popular, yet misunderstood monster of our time. Tracing the origins of the zombie from Haitian folklore to Hollywood horror, the film investigates common misrepresentations of this figure to reveal its connection to slavery and movements of resistance.
